DRAGON BALL DAIMA ANIME DETAILS

Dragon Ball Daima (ドラゴンボールDAIMA) is a Japanese anime television series produced by Toei Animation, marking the sixth animated installment in the Dragon Ball franchise. It is the second and final series to be penned by Akira Toriyama, the franchise's original creator, who passed away in March 2024. The series premiered on Fuji TV in October 2024.

The announcement of Dragon Ball Daima was made during Toei Animation's New York Comic Con panel on October 12, 2023. Toriyama was credited as being "deeply involved" in the project beyond his usual role, contributing to the story, character designs, and many of the series' vehicles, monsters, and background characters. Toriyama even coined the title "Daima," a made-up term written as "大魔" in Japanese. According to Akio Iyoku, executive producer of the Dragon Ball franchise, the series had been in development for five years, though the title was finalized just a month prior to the panel. Iyoku also stated that Toriyama crafted the entire story, which he described as having a strong sense of adventure and action.

In November 2023, the January 2024 issue of V Jump revealed the main staff members for Dragon Ball Daima, confirming that Masako Nozawa would reprise her iconic role as Goku. The anime is co-directed by Yoshitaka Yashima (known for Dragon Ball Super) and Aya Komaki (director of One Piece), with Yūko Kakihara credited for series composition. Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, a long-time collaborator on Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT, adapted Toriyama's character designs for animation.

A second trailer focused on Goku was released during the Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour event on January 28, 2024. Character illustrations, including some new faces designed by Toriyama, were also unveiled during the event. Sadly, Toriyama passed away on March 1, 2024. A week later, his message accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award from the 2024 Tokyo Anime Awards Festival was publicly shared, where he revealed that Dragon Ball Daima was initially planned as a standalone anime, but his involvement grew as he provided advice throughout the project.

On July 19, a key visual and third trailer were released, featuring multiple characters with the tagline "Welcome to the Great Adventure!" Fuji TV later announced the specific broadcast date—October 10—and confirmed that all episodes had been completed. On September 2, a fourth trailer and new key visual were released, now with the tagline "Welcome to the Demon Realm!" The trailer introduced new cast members, including Yumiko Kobayashi as Kaioshin, Koki Uchiyama as Glorio, and Fairouz Ai as Panzy, and teased the theme song of the show.

Further casting announcements followed, with Showtaro Morikubo as Gomah, Junya Enoki as Degesu, and Yoko Hikasa as Dr. Arinsu being revealed on September 10. Dragon Ball Daima also marked a casting change, with Ryōta Suzuki replacing Tōru Furuya as Yamcha, as announced on October 4.
